Why We Love This Coffee
Asociación de Apicultores y Caficultores de Union Cantinil was founded in 2011 to help producers grow organic coffee and develop environmentally-sustainable practices. This is a group of producers that grow coffee on very small farms - only 3 hectares each on average. Two of the highlights that AAPICUC introduced were 1) beekeeping - this is done in tandem with the coffee production as not only do the producers end up with an additional product to sell (honey), the presence of bees actually boosts coffee yields by as much as 20-25%, even though coffee trees are self-pollinating and do not need the bees for pollination; and 2) filtered processing water - this helps protect local waterways.
